Paul began the seminar by discussing some of the most common injuries that occur in the workplace. He stated, 'in 2009/2010 52,508 Queenslanders made claims for sprains, strains or musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Together these injuries make up 48% of all workplace injuries in Australia, costing $311.5 million in Queensland alone.' Injury prevention programs with a focus on core strength can help to significantly reduce these types of injuries.
Paul explained that core strength is important for a number of reasons. 'It holds, supports and keeps the pelvis level as well controlling movement at all points,' Paul said. Paul showed the group how to set their deepest layer of abdominal muscles as well as lower traps and deep neck flexors for correct posture, explaining these are essential for lifting throughout the work day.
Paul also spoke about how to use leg muscles properly to prevent degenerative changes over time and targeted specific strategies for strengthening to reduce the risk of trips and falls at work and in life. He then went through how to personally check your leg strength, getting the audience to complete a 2 to 1 exercise which can identify weaknesses in critical areas.
Paul discussed with the group how these skills can be used in conjunction with targeted SSTM Everyday injury prevention techniques to ease pain, nip problems in the bud and slash injury rates. Paul talked about using this strategy to target high risk groups and cited the examples of Incitec Pivot who are driving SSTM culture as well as NCM Scaffolds who used these techniques to reduce their injury rates by 87.5%.
